Overview — English

Besakih Temple, famously known as the "Mother Temple," is the largest, holiest, and most important Hindu temple complex in Bali. Perched on the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung at an elevation of about 1,000 meters, the complex comprises over 80 individual temples arrayed across extensive terraced hillsides. The view of the main temple, Pura Penataran Agung, with the towering peak of Mount Agung in the background, is one of Bali's most iconic sights.

Due to its vast size and steep incline, visiting Besakih requires a decent level of physical stamina. In recent years, visitor management has greatly improved; the entrance ticket now inclusively covers a sarong and sash rental, an electric buggy shuttle from the parking terminal to the temple entrance, and an official local guide. Utilizing the official guide helps visitors understand the complex history and wards off unauthorized touts.

Travel Tips

Accessibility

Overall access

The complex involves long walking distances on steep, paved slopes and many steep stone stairs.

Wheelchair suitability

While the electric shuttle assists with the initial hill, the actual temple courtyards are completely inaccessible to wheelchairs due to stairs.
