Overview — English

The Puputan Klungkung Monument is a striking 28-meter tall memorial located in the very center of Semarapura city. It was built to commemorate the tragic and heroic Puputan Klungkung which occurred on April 28, 1908. In Balinese culture, a puputan refers to a fight to the death. Facing heavily armed Dutch colonial forces, the King of Klungkung, along with his royal family and thousands of loyal subjects, chose to march into suicidal battle (a ritual puputan) rather than surrender their sovereignty and honor.

The monument is designed in the shape of a Lingga-Yoni and is constructed from black stone, symbolizing the grim finality of the battle. Beneath the monument lies the Semarajaya Museum, which houses historical dioramas, traditional weaponry, and artifacts that detail the timeline of the conflict. Visiting this site provides profound historical context regarding the fierce independence and spirit of the Balinese people.
