Overview — English

Padangbai is the primary seaport town in East Bali. Though small in footprint, it is a bustling, chaotic hub because it serves as the main departure point for both the large public RO-RO ferries heading to Lembar (Lombok) and dozens of tourist fast boats heading to the Gili Islands and Lombok.

While the vast majority of tourists use Padangbai strictly as a one-hour transit stop before boarding a boat, the town is actually a popular base for backpackers and scuba divers. Padangbai is flanked by two beautiful hidden coves: Blue Lagoon Beach to the north (famous for shore snorkeling) and Bias Tugel Beach to the south (a secluded white-sand beach). The main street is lined with dive centers, budget guesthouses, and casual cafes. Word of warning: the port area is notorious for aggressive ticket touts and a local "taxi mafia" that actively blocks ride-hailing apps and inflates transport prices. It is highly advised to book your fast boat tickets and hotel transfers online well in advance.

Travel Tips

Accessibility

Overall access

The main town streets are paved but often lack proper sidewalks, forcing pedestrians to walk amid traffic.

Wheelchair suitability

Boarding the fast boats usually involves walking across narrow, unsteady gangplanks or wading into the water, which is not wheelchair friendly.

FAQ — English

Is it safe to order a Grab or Gojek from Padangbai Port?

It is highly problematic. Ride-hailing drivers are heavily restricted by local transport syndicates. You will likely have to carry your luggage up to the main highway outside town to be picked up.

How long is the fast boat ride to Gili Trawangan?

It typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours in normal sea conditions.
